The brightness arc is a trap: *bright opening* seduces the viewer into expecting a magical-girl idyll, only for the closing act’s plunge to 0.436 to retroactively stain every cheerful pastel frame of *Madoka Magica* with dread. Studio Shaft and director Akiyuki Shinbo weaponize the genre’s own visual grammar—that saccharine Red-Orange dominance (33%) and the desaturated, chalky palette of soft beiges (#ECEAE1) and muted tans (#DCD3B1)—to construct what feels like a memory already corrupted. The average saturation of 0.181 is astonishingly low for a series that opens with a pink-haired heroine and a talking cat; this is not the saturated exuberance of *Cardcaptor Sakura* but the faded wallpaper of a dollhouse about to be smashed. That Red hue (32%) isn't warmth but the color of grief, of blood spilling across a labyrinth’s floor, of a promise made under witch-light. The middle act’s spike to 0.705 is the cruelest misdirection—a false dawn before the show yanks the color temperature toward its true, cold-grey conclusion. Every frame is a lie told in pastels.
